17 Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. In other words, in communion with God this would secure their contentment and happiness. Its not that we have a different Bible and the infallible word of God is just open to interpretation. (2) If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast aboutbut not before God. Not only that, but this translation does not do justice to all the words in the Greek ("even" and "rather") which come out in the alternative translation: "Were you called as a slave? 1 Corinthians 7:19, ESV Apollos then went to Achaia (of which Corinth was the capitol) where he gave a powerful witness to the messiahship of Jesus (Acts 18:24-28). 2) Even before our salvation God worked for our good. And note one more thing. As one commentator, Lenski, writes, Paul is taking the minor idea of these assignments that we have, and he is including them with the major blessing to the call to faith in Jesus Christ.. That is the great message of this mornings passage. Verse 19 says literally, "Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God (is everything)." One time he uses the word "calling" in this vocational sense, namely, in verse 20. He wrote; For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God (Romans 2:28-29). This is the second principle that Paul goes on to say is that what the gospel does is undercut the very foundation upon which chattel-based slavery, possession-based slavery rests. We can paraphrase the verses to show the difference between the general call and the effective call: Paul says, "We call everyone to believe in Christ crucified, but many Jews find this call to be a stumbling block, and many Gentiles find this call to be foolishness, but those who are called (that is, powerfully and effectively drawn to Christ) find the gospel call to be the power and wisdom of God.". But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity" (RSV). Now if we read the word called as it is translated there it almost sounds like what Paul is saying is that we are called to these assignments. 20 Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called. They wrote to the apostle Paul; and they asked him many questions about such things. 18 Was a man already circumcised when he was called? We want the Bible to give us clear answers. Let me give you an illustration of what this might look like. Bloom Where You're Planted. In verse 18, he wrote Was anyone called while circumcised? He looks to the slave who may feel hopeless and says, "In Christ you are a free man. Let him not be circumcised. But if you translate it as a command to seek freedom, the true point of the passage is obscured. In calling us to Himself in Christ at the time He did, and in the place of life He did, and under the circumstances He didwith that upbringing we had, or in that cultural setting in which we live our lives, or with that social standing He has given us in this worldHe has not made any mistakes. But it may be, as Jesus predicted in Matthew 10:34ff., that the rebellion and unbelief of the unbelieving spouse will turn Christianity into a sword that severs, instead of a peaceful balm that heals. So, in verse nineteen Paul says, just to explain this a little further, Likewise, he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. Paul says you are missing the point, you dont have to worry about the ethnic or national boundaries that existed in the old covenant because the call of Jesus Christ comes to all kinds of people in all kinds of cultures and the call says, follow Jesus where you are. In the assignment in which the call of God came to you, walk in that. Let him not seek circumcision.1 Corinthians 7:18, ESV Now we need to see how Paul applied this principle in his day, and what it means for us today. We pray this in Christs name. He says in verse twenty-two, 29. Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called (vv. Effectual calling is the work of Gods almighty power and grace, whereby (out of his free and special love to his elect, and from nothing in them moving him thereunto) he doth, in his accepted time, invite and draw them to Jesus Christ, by his word and Spirit; savingly enlightening their minds, renewing and powerfully determining their wills, so as they (although in themselves dead in sin) are hereby made willing and able freely to answer his call, and to accept and embrace the grace offered and conveyed therein. How can I love the Lord God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and how can I love my neighbor as myself wherever I am?What this passage teaches us is that we cannot search for satisfaction in what we are doing, but in how we are doing what we are doing. The idea of abiding in a situation while you are awaiting something bigger, we see most clearly in 1 John 2:28 "A man's mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps" (Proverbs 16:9). The moment any woman or man or young person places their faith in Jesus Christ, they become completely born-again in Him. What Paul was doing was showing that obedience to the commands of God is so much more important than any cultural distinctives, that the mere changing of these distinctives should be of no importance whatever to the Christian. Bible Study & Sermon Videos; 1 corinthians 16:17-18; 1 Corinthians 16:17-18.
